In the world of gaming, there’s always something new to try. However, some games just seem to last the passage of time; whether that’s because they’re a perennial favourite, passed down through generations, or because they just have the ability to appeal on all levels. While, everyone’s preference for games is personal, here’s 5 games that have, over the years, remained the same, but which are still proving to be as popular as ever.

Super Mario Bros

Released on July 9th back in 1981, Mario first hit our screens with his ability to climb ladders in ‘Donkey Kong’. However in 1985, this cheeky chappy was crowned as the face and mascot of Nintendo, and became the ultimate game of choice for gamers of all ages. Not only does Mario have the accolade of ‘Best Selling Video Game Series of All Time’ and ‘Most Prolific Video Game Character’, but he’s become an icon in pop culture, and shows no sign of losing his popularity.

Tetris

Who would have thought that a game based on controlling blocks to create a line sequence would still be popular today? One of the oldest video games, dating back to June 1984, Tetris is actually quite complicated, but extremely addictive and a whole lot of fun. As the flagship game for the handheld Game Boy, it helped the console achieve the title of the most popular portable gaming system. Tetris has also become one of the top-selling games of all time, proving that we simply can’t get enough of it, and even spawned films, based on the lives of the man behind Tetris, and its players.

Roulette

While roulette doesn’t immediately spring to mind as a long standing favourite, the emergence of online slots such as virgin slots has ensured that this genre of casino gaming has become increasingly popular. Whether it’s the chance to pit your wits against the wheel, or we all like to gamble a little, more and more people are starting to play roulette, whose origins go right back to the 18th century.

The Legend of Zelda

This franchise has certainly withstood the test of time, with many gamers starting their gaming career by joining the quest to save Princess Zelda from Ganondorf. This epic takes place in the kingdom of Hyrule, where the Triforce, a series of three all-powerful triangles of courage, wisdom and power¸ are used to navigate the adventure. Since its initial release in 1986, many gamers have embarked on this mission, with most adopting a favourite Zelda game, whether it’s ‘Wind Waker’, ‘A Link to the Past’, or one of countless others.

Pokémon

And finally, staying with video games, who can forget Pokémon? A fairly new release in terms of video games, having been released towards the end of 1998, this simple game captured the imagination of generations, as it offered the ability to create your very own zoo of colourful animals. However, it’s not just about keeping them as pets, but training them to fight, and the object of the game is to build the best team of Pokémon possible. The second-most successful and lucrative video game franchise worldwide, it’s been brought right up to date, and certainly deserves a mention.
